Entry requirements PGCE: degree at 2.2 or above in the subject you teach
Certificate in Education: a level 3 qualification or a 3rd class degree in the subject you teach
Both: A guaranteed minimum of 150 hours of teaching
Level 2 communication skills
Delivery September intake
Study part-time (2 years)

Is this course for you?
If you want to have a professional teaching career in post-16 education you need this qualification. If you teach in Post-Compulsory (post-16) Education and Training (PCET), this course will develop your professional skills and knowledge to nationally required standards. Whether you are a graduate or non-graduate, you will have the chance to gain a fully endorsed SVUK (Standards Verification UK) qualification. Graduates with a 2:2 or above take the PGCE route and non-graduates with a Level 3 qualification or 3rd class degree take the Cert Ed route. Apply directly to Newham University Centre.

What will you learn?

The course covers all the areas needed to reach, and exceed, the professional standards currently in place throughout the UK. The subject areas covered include:
•    identifying learner needs
•    planning and delivering teaching
•    using resources
•    effective communication and social interaction in the classroom
•    assessing learning and evaluating your own teaching

You will also gain a good overview of the modern PCET sector and how it may develop. The emphasis throughout the course is to develop your teaching skills. You will be required to demonstrate your competence and understanding by successfully completing a number of coursework assignments. Your teaching will also be observed on a number of occasions. You may also be eligible for support with your studies if you have a learning difficulty or disability. This support is free to UK residents.

Options on completion
This programme enables successful candidates to complete all mandatory requirements for a recognised PCET teaching qualification leading to QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills).  However, if you are a teacher of ESOL, numeracy or literacy you will also need an appropriate Level 5 specialist qualification in order to fully meet the professional requirements.
